Coastal fog, wind and salt spray, in addition to poor clay and gravel soils presented challenging conditions in this beach garden redesign.
First, an existing patio was modified to create a planting buffer of sturdy shrubs that can withstand the wind; adding protection for patio seating and for more tender plants -- without blocking the ocean view.
Ornamental grasses and exuberant flowering plants were combined freely in meadow-like drifts, adding movement and a casual beachy feeling.
Locally collected driftwood was used to define planting areas and add a sculptural element.
Corten steel raised planters contain greens and herbs. Other edibles like blueberries and raspberries are grown in terra cotta pots.
